For more than four decades, Anton & Michel has stood as Carmel's quiet authority on the European table — a room where flambé is still finished beside you, and the wine list runs deeper than the cellar that holds it.

Opened in 1980 and remodeled in 2013 with handset stonework that frames the courtyard fountain, the dining room offers floor-to-ceiling windows, an expanded lounge, and warm earthy tones that invite the kind of evening you remember in particular.

The kitchen draws from the classic European canon and refines it for the California coast. Tableside service — Steak Diane, Cherries Jubilee, Bananas Foster, Crêpes Suzette — is finished in the dining room, the way it ought to be.

Zagat calls it "Carmel's long-standing paean to graciousness in dining out."
